Thanks Melissa!

Last week I unofficially joined this meaningful
journey offered by Melissa at The Inspired Room. This week I will begin in earnest to post on
Fridays about the week and how my goals to
simplify and improve my health are coming along.

Everyone is in a different place.
Their posts look varied and oftentimes
enviable.

However, this corner of Pennsylvania today
finds a 41 year old homemaker/candlemaker/financial
advisor/homeschool teacher...trying to find a balance.

That balance between serving others and remaining
in good health. Anyone else in this boat with me?
I know you are. I read about it daily.

So, new commitments this week include consciously
eliminating, or greatly reducing, the amount of high
fructose corn syrup our family consumes. This may
seem like a strange goal...but with family histories
of diabetes on all sides of our family trees we must
take steps to lose weight and reduce the risks.

I did not know that it was in the whole wheat bread
I buy. I thought I was doing a good thing in getting
it...but no. So, I will be investigating good bread
recipes to make on my own...and also looking for a bread
to buy that does not have it in it.

I think our family will benefit greatly from this
one managable step. That and dedicated time to
exercise.

This was the main thing this week.
I am drinking tea
as often as I remember...another goal for this year.

Thanks Melissa, for encouraging us in this way!

Welcome!

Welcome to the new readers
that have been popping
by this week!

I am delighted.

This blog is a hodge podge of
whatever is rolling around in
my brain around 7am each morning.

I never know what will pop out
onto the keyboard... so don't expect
much...

I will tell you about my children, pets,
parents, schoolwork, house, meals, church,
friends...just life, I guess.

Every day as I cruise through blogland
I am inspired and encouraged in some
way. It is my hope to offer that encouragement
back to those who stop in here.

Several of you readers have been so kind as
to comment on the music playing here. Thank
You! I love music! It is so important here
at Hospitality Lane. It means so much that
you have recognized it. Thank YOU!

Several of my blog friends have been going
through intense struggles within their families
with health issues, marriage issues or relationship
problems. It has been and will be my pleasure to
lift these precious concerns up in prayer.

When I was on bedrest for four months with Chelsea
God impressed on me the importance of prayer... and
that it was something I could do from the couch.
Regular readers know that I am a "do-er" not a
sitter. They have also heard this before...but for
you new folks, I am so thankful for this time of learning
about serving the Lord through prayer. You just
never know what wonderful thing is going to come
out of a very hard situation.

Come back often.
Leave comments!
I love them...as do you.

Have a super sweet day!
May you be blessed as you are a blessing!

Winter Beauty

Oh the bliss of a freshly fallen snow...
the aftermath of peaceful quiet,
stunning blue skies
and a fox playing nearby.

The fox shots are for my neighbors who have
come to appreciate our little friend.

One case where a blog has preserved the wildlife...lol.

All of these photos were taken yesterday between
7 and 8 am.

Have a blessed day!

Orchids and More at Longwood Gardens

Mikey had his interview with
Longwood Gardens yesterday.
It was so neat!

There is a lengthy and involved
process to walk through to see if
he will qualify for an internship,
however, he is very excited and willing
to do whatever he can to get into the
Program.

It is very competitive.
Only ten students will be chosen.
His chances seem slim at this point,
however, it would be so wrong to
discourage him. Who ever would have
thought that they would even
be willing to talk to us in the first place!

Whether he gets into the
High School Internship Program, or not, he will take
classes that will certify him in certain areas
of Horticulture.
This will be a wonderful experience for Mikey.

As we ate lunch yesterday, Mikey
was buried in the Course Book totally
caught up in all of the options!

These photos are some that I snapped
as we went through the Gardens yesterday.
I highly recommend clicking on them to
see all of the detail...they will enlarge
very nicely.
Due to the nasty weather we nearly
had the place to ourselves.

The workers were taking advantage of that fact and
were busy bees all around. It was neat, in light of
Mikey's dream, to get to see them at work.

How do they do these things?
Amazing!

It was so surreal to walk through snowflakes to the Conservatory to find all of this color and summer or spring like conditions.
From this...

To This...

A new display was going up. It is a large hanging "Orchid"
with baskets of draping orchids carefully hung from each petal.

I think we should all have one or two of these orchid display
cases. That way they can maintain the proper humidity and we
can enjoy them...like we could afford them. I told Jonathan
he needs to learn to make these...so pretty!

Or a chandelier like this?

More eye candy...

We will be taking all of the necessary steps
to apply for this internship.
I'll let you know if anything exciting develops.
It won't be until May that we know one way or the
other...so like I said, it is not quick!

Hope you have a wonderful day today!

Enjoy some beauty, whether it is flowers, your own
craftiness, or something else that speaks to you.

Your Friend,

Some "Beary" Thoughtful Girls

My daughter, Chelsea, has been blessed
with excellent friends!

It is so wonderful to see these young
ladies growing up together and to see their
purposeful involvement in the hurting and
needs around them.

One of these friends, Kristen, called a couple
of weeks ago and had an idea for her birthday
party. She wanted her friends to meet her at
Build-a-Bear. They would make stuffed animals
and then take them to the Hospital for sick
children.

I wondered how that would go. Traditionally
when you make one of these Bears you bond with
it, print a Birth Certificate... you love
your Bear!

Well, four girls met at Build-a-Bear. They made
eight stuffed animals. They dressed these cute
and cuddlies. They spent their very own money.

That meant some had more to spend than others...
but they all worked together to create the most
bang for their buck!

I took these pictures while we waited for the other girls
to arrive. Then I left Chelsea in the capable
hands of Kristen's Mom.

After the time in the store the whole crew
went back to Kristen's house and made
cards to go with each plush friend.

If you could have seen the joy and satisfaction
on their faces. It was precious!

On Monday Kristen took everything to the Hospital.
Her Mom said they treated her like a celebrity.
She did not get to see the children that will receive
these because of Privacy Acts. Kristen knew this was
the case, but did the project anyway.

Now that this event was a success, Kristen is thinking
about making it bigger next year. I'll bet she'll begin
saving that babysitting money even earlier for that.
Maybe...just maybe...Build-a-Bear would do some matching
or donations to the cause..maybe.

Way to go, Girls! You make your Mommies very proud.

New Week!

Well, today begins a very busy week
for us. One Mom leaves for Florida
while another returns from an interesting
time in Florida and the Bahamas.
Let's just say that due to some
missing paperwork Mom almost got an
extended vacation....yikes!
Thankfully, it was able to be remedied.

I have a Co-op Committee meeting,
Mikey has an interview for a possible
Summer Internship at Longwood Gardens.
It is a stretch, they have never taken
students outside of two nearby school
districts...but they are interested in
Mikey. Please pray with me that if this
is for him that it will be obvious and
that everything would work out.

It is scary because Mikey doesn't have
his driver's license yet,
but should be by then and the reality of
letting a new driver take on a 45 minute commute,
one way, is starting to set in.

Thankfully, it is all country or
low traffic roads.
So, I think he would be ok.
As far as I know he would only be on
the road in daylight. So that is good
too. But still...

So, how about that football game last night?
Wow!
We were kind of casual
about it until the second half and as that
went on we were on the edge of our seats...
some of us literally. What a fun game.

My apologies to the Cardinals fans...but they
did the same thing to themselves that my
Penn State did in the Rose Bowl.
Lost because of Penalties.
Some of you would disagree with that...
you go right ahead. lol

We are getting ready for some kind
of snow here. I'll believe it when
I see it!
Right now everything outside is just
glossy from the ice over the little
bit of snow.

Yesterday was gorgeous. It was about
40 degrees and no wind.
Sun and blue skies.
We went on our traditional Sunday walk.
I had stopped going along because of the
pain in my hip and side...however, I went
part of the way yesterday and loved it.
I'm going to attempt to work through the
pain. It wouldn't be good to give in to
it entirely and let my heart go bad...now
would it?

Chelsea just bought a Wii Fit and I am working
on it. I know, it doesn't sound like you could
get a real workout...but you can!

So...Tylenol and I will work together to lose
some weight and get my heart healthy!

Those of you who post about your health and exercise
goals get me moving...so keep it up!

Well, have a great day today!

Important Lessons of the Heart

Being a Preacher's Kid had its ups and downs.
Definitely more ups, though.

As I was braising meat for stew to take to
our Fellowship Meal at church today, my
thoughts wandered back to my childhood.
Maybe that is one of the blessings of time
at the stove...time to think!

My parents were as involved in the Church
as one could get. They lived it, they
breathed it. They walked the talk.

Dad was the Pastor. Mom was the perfect
Pastor's wife. Hosting, supporting, being
there when she was needed. Many days I
remember walking down the hallway in our
home and seeing her in her room at the
end of the hall, on her knees, earnestly
praying. I don't know what so burdened her
in those days...but I do know where she went
with those burdens.

What struck me this morning, however, was how
much of their work and concern was "outside"
the realm of the church building. For example,
there was a bar about a mile down the road from
our home. About two miles the other direction
lived the town drunk, I'll call him P. I remember P.
driving a beat up blue van. He would stop at our home when
he was very, very drunk. I have never seen him
sober. Except briefly that one night when he came to
church totally plastered. Found himself at the alter
as he began to sober up. Realized he had tears on his
face and asked Dad to distract everyone while he wiped
his tears and got out of there....
During his stops P. would get closer than we kids
would have liked...given his state. He really liked
my brother for some reason...Perhaps he reminded him
of his own young son.
He would play the piano.
He would "expound on the scriptures", such as,
"Man cannot live on bread alone...he must have
Skippy's Peanut Butter!" Said with a slur.
He would stink up the house.

I never, never saw either of my parents be rude to
this man. Ever! They would start the coffee and
talk to him until he sobered up enough to continue
on his way...or until he decided he was ready to go
on. It wasn't always that long.

Eventually this man's wife developed cancer.
My parents were devastated. She was a wonderful
woman who already had so much to deal with. They
walked through radiation with her. All the while
befriending her husband and working with him.

Their son, G., would come to our place to "dig
fishing worms" with my Dad. He started bringing
his friends.

Finally the wife succombed to her cancer. Oh, how
my parents struggled over little G. Being at home
with this man so consumed by drink.

You see, my parents did all they could do in the
church. Then they followed the Lord's leading and
guiding in this life and so many others.

That example meant so much to me.

Shortly before Daddy died he received a call saying
that our friend, P. had passed away. Little G., now
a grown man wanted Dad and Mom at the funeral. They
went. Oh, how quickly life's cycle ticks by.
30 years gone...
just like that!

There are so many hurting people.
Sometimes they don't look, act or smell loveable.
But, who did Jesus love?
To whom did He give so much of His time?

Jesus spent time with those within the "church"
but He also ate with sinners, He healed the sick,
and He cast out the demons.

I learned from my parents that it is not easy to
be a desciple of God. Sometimes it calls us to
go places and do things that are uncomfortable.

But the rewards are eternal.

One life changed by the power of God brings the
Angels to their feet in a dance of joy!
Can you see it?
Oh what a blessed thought!

May we see those around us as Spiritual Beings in
need of a Saviour.
May we answer the call.
