From Summer Rose to Kitty Rescue

Chelsea, Jonathan and their friend John
were out in the front yard playing
frisbee.  I went out to try to get some
action shots and quickly lost interest
in taking pictures of them....
so I began wandering around the yard to
see what was blooming.

I found hydrangea, black eyed susans, echinacea,
russian sage and a few precious roses.

They are mostly taking a Summer break
waiting for cooler weather for a last wave
of blooms but there were a few amazing
flowers all ready for pictures.

I was taken with the color.
Isn't it stunning?

Our neighbors stopped and said they
were headed to rescue a kitten stuck in
a sewer drain.

We wished them well and went on
with our evening.
Then the phone rang.
It was the neighbors.
Was Mikey here?
Nope!
He was out playing mini golf
with a guy from work.

Well, did we have any ideas for
getting the kitten out?

Anyone who has known me long
knows I have a history with animal
rescues.  The animals almost always
end up better than me in the bargain.
I've been bitten, scratched and gotten
ringworm in the quest to save cats from the
predicaments they get themselves into.
I've basically been asked
by my entire family to swear off
direct animal rescue....
but it was Warren who told the neighbors
we would be over with some food.
So...off we went.
We drove to the spot where we found
them surrounding a grate which they
had somehow lifted.

Their teenage son disappeared down the
hole with the can of smelly food that we provided.
I was all ready to snap photos for this
should have been awesome post.
However, that nasty message popped up,
"No camera card".
Oh how I hate that message.
And all of my own doing.
I had been so taken with the rose photos
that I had downloaded them straight away and
had not replaced the card.

Well, to make a long story short.
A younger brother was called in.
He was able to slowly crawl through
the tunnel filled with spiders and cobwebs
pushing the kitten to his brother at the
other end.  They emerged victoriously
holding a sweet longhaired white kitten.
My Neighbor, Ellen, took this picture of the little sweetie!

We all had to laugh at one point when we
were feeling so badly for young Garrett in the tunnel.
Someone asked him how he was doing
to which he responded,
"This is great!  It's like Dirty Jobs!"
Oh, how the culture of the day
has impacted our young ones....
but in this case I was glad.
It helped him do something
that had to be very uncomfortable
to do.

You go, Garrett!
Great Job, JT,
for hearing the kitten and
for caring enough to call for help!

Just another evening at Hospitality Lane.
Oh, did I mention that a couple of chicks
escaped this afternoon requiring rescue attempts?
It's true.
All but one of the chicks are home safe and sound.
Sadly, one did not return.
It is NOT boring here.
Not by a long shot!

Probably a good thing that you could not take a picture. I would have wanted the kitty! I hope he/she will
have a good home with someone.

Thanks for the story and the happy ending. I have not had to rescue as many animals now that the kids are out of the house. This makes me wonder how many of the animals really needed rescued and how many they just wanted to keep. Good job.

Your flowers are beautiful. That's the 3rd kitten rescue I've heard of in the last couple of weeks. Lots of nice people out there helping these sweet kitties.

We love Teaching Textbooks around here. No longer pulling my hair out over math. You are sure to find the other disk, now that you've ordered a replacement :)

Enjoy your weekend!
Blessings,
Marcia

I've never heard of "Dirty Jobs" though I've certainly been involved in a few. Fortunately, my days of crawling around in sewer drains are long gone.

Well done and especially well done, Becky, if you don't have a long-haired white kitten living at your house now.

Beautiful flower shots, especially the rose. Its petals look translucent.

Your perennials are looking great! Gotta love these hard working flowers! Those roses are an amazing color! Wow.

I said "uh oh" when I saw your blog title, but I am so happy the wee kitty was rescued. Is it living with Ellen and Family?

Mike Rowe would be proud! Hospitality Lane sounds like a place everyone would wish to live. Beautiful flowers, kids, and helpful neighbors - the triple crown!
