Garden Features that Add Interest

As Mikey gets deeper into landscape
design I learn more and more about
the nuances of a great garden.

Not every garden will have a tower.
That is a given, but since we enjoyed
this tower last week let me show you
some things we enjoyed about it.

A view of the tower from the wooded path
that winds toward it. There are many
white pines in this section of the garden
and on this morning after rain the smell
of pine was strong and invigorating.

The path brings you around to this moss covered stone wall leading to the doorway of the tower. Notice the Wrought Iron. It is a very prominent feature in this section
of the garden. Used for its practicality and beauty.

A look up the tower...the stonework is wonderful.

Another example of stonework at
Longwood Gardens...

Because the landscape is varied in height
there are many walls, steps and other stone
or brick features that serve both functional
and beautifying purposes.
As you head toward the Italian Water Gardens
you come across this brick structure that begins
to set the mood for a more European design.

Many gardens, here and some we have enjoyed in
Virginia use boxwood to divide and add interest.

A special feature within the boxwoods.
Love this!

So, while I could go on and on
this is the major point I am taking
away from this subject. While most
of our gardens aren't large enough
to include things on this scale
it is interesting to add features
other than flowers to our garden.

These are the backbone that frame
and feature the flowers and plants.

We are off to a dentist appointment with Mikey
early this morning. Hope you are having
a wonderful day!

Best wishes at the dentist's! (Not my favorite place...)

Lovely features indeed. I have a few garden features...maybe, I truly do need more flowers than features.
