Bye-Bye Stone Tunnel

For many, many years the entrance to
nearby Quarryville has been marked by
this stone tunnel. Each of the hundreds
of large stones forming the tunnel weighs
about 4,000 pounds and were handcarved
by immigrant stone masons.

Years ago the trains ceased to run over
this tunnel and for the past twenty years
there has been an effort to remove the
tunnel since it is the cause of many
accidents and scares the daylights out of
any parent with a teenager learning to drive.

Truth be told, it is a sad day for this
quaint town. This has been one thing that
has kept truck traffic to a minimum. Now
it is likely to see many, many large trucks
in the downtown.

A local community organization is selling
the stones. While I would love to claim a
piece of this history, I don't know how I
would get it home or what I would do with
it once I got it here.
That is a big stone!

Yesterday my neighbor, Ellen, said she was
going to look at the progress. Did I want
her to take my camera?
What a great idea!!

So, while the first photo you saw at the top
of the post was taken from LancasterOnline.com
the rest of these were taken by my friend, Ellen.

This is the end of an era...but hopefully things will
not change...too much...in this sweet little town
so well known for its stonework. The town got its
name from Quarries that were such a source of income
many years ago.

I am going to miss that tunnel...sort of!

Now, on a completely different topic...

Gayla, at Oatmeal and Whimsy has
tagged me. Sure enough I am to
share six unimportant things
that make me happy.

Let me see...

1. The cardinals brightening up the yard.

2. Watching my kids play together.

3. An extensive greenhouse.

4. A gentle rainstorm when I don't have to leave the house.

5. Roast Beef - as my Mom makes it.

6. Singing at the top of my lungs when no one is listening.

There you have it!

Life is a bit like this tunnel and these seemingly
unimportant things. They all fit together to make
our lives what they are. It is important that we
not let anyone steal our joy. Those little things
all add up to big contentment.

Now I am to tag some other people...

Mrs. Rabe - Creekside Cottage
Kelly - Cozy Comforts
JD - Ribbon Challenged

I am not going to tell them.
They will have to come and see....

Consider yourself tagged if this
looks like fun to you. Let me
know if you do it. I'd love to
read the things that make you
happy.

Have a delightful day!!!

What a cool photo of the tunnel. I don't really like change, so progress leaves me cold although I understand needing safer and safer roads. Even one life! Thanks for playing my game. I loved your items on the list.... Hugs...
